Creative Mornings PKX
One sunny day in July, Jason and I were walking through downtown Kittery, Maine. We spotted a small dog that looked very similar to our Maple. So, of course, we stopped the dog owner and asked no less than 7 questions about the pup while exchanging niceties about the weather and the day. Her name was Noelle and she owns FiveLine Creative nearby. She was just out for lunch and a stroll with the pup. Jason happened to be wearing his Brainstorm hat that day, (custom made by Ape & Bird!) with our Brainstorm logo stitched into it. She glanced over at his hat and said, "Do you know those guys? I've been meaning to reach out to them about something." We immediately said we ARE those guys and had a good laugh about it. She went on to say that she runs the Portsmouth chapter of Creative Mornings and she has had us on a list of potential speakers for a while now. How exciting! We gushed over the possibility. We've only had teeny tiny little speaking gigs here and there in our ten years and this is an organization that does talks in 170 cities. Very cool! So we said of course, reach out when you are making your list for 2019.
Then in December, she reached out and we organized more seriously. She gave us a list of themes for 2019, one of which was symmetry. We were a bit scared of the theme, not only because it was in February but because the way we were is rather ASYMMETRICAL, despite what it may look like to outsiders. But they saw it as symbiotic and we're not shy when it comes to challenges that push us in weird ways. So we said yes! For the next few weeks we got to work putting together a presentation of eleven years of projects and prints. It had to be at least 20 minutes (to leave room for Q&A). We had to tie into the theme in a pretty prominent way. Our story has been an interesting one and we we're so delighted when tickets were finally made available and there was a very long waiting list right off the bat. What a freakin' honor.
Watch the presentation below! Pictures from the day shot by Kate and Keith Photography, but you can see the entire set on their Flickr page. Enjoy all the nerves and the silly illustrations!
